Turmeric is the third best-selling spice after flax and wheat grass in the last few years. Curcumin, its main ingredient, is a popular food additive with a nice, mild aroma and yellow color. Hence, people usually think that its consumption has no side effects. however, this is not completely accurate. This is because we often consider that natural things cannot be toxic or dangerous. Nonetheless, to some extent, this spice isn’t toxic, but there are individuals who have complained about nausea, diarrhea, stomach ache, and dizziness after turmeric consumption. Namely, when combined with black pepper, curcumin can be increased by 2000% and only one dose of this may feel like 29 cups. That is, the blood levels increase and this mixture can change the DNA in vitro. Therefore, to avoid unwanted side effects, these groups of people should avoid turmeric: 1. Pregnant and breastfeeding women. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consume turmeric cautiously or even better, avoid it completely. Namely, when consumed orally, turmeric can put their pregnancy at risk by stimulating a menstrual cycle or the uterus. Also, men who are trying to be fathers should avoid it as well, because turmeric is known to decrease the testosterone levels and sperm movement. 2. People with gallstones. If you are a person who has problems with gallstones, you should avoid turmeric because a recent study showed that this spice can cause serious problems and ache in the gallbladder. However, it’s good to know that turmeric can prevent gallbladder stones and protect the liver by stimulating the gallbladder functions. 3. People with biliary tract obstruction. They should avoid this spice or consume it very carefully. 4. People with kidney stones. If you consume turmeric on a daily basis, you are at a higher risk of developing kidney stones. Moreover, this spice has high levels of soluble oxalate which easily attaches to calcium. Calcium oxalate cannot be dissolved and this is the main reason for kidney stone problems. To be on the safe side, consume only 50 mg daily. 5. Diabetics. Turmeric has been associated with lowered blood sugar levels. Therefore, if you are a diabetic, consume turmeric moderately in order to keep your blood sugar levels balanced. 6. People who will undergo surgery. Turmeric and Black Pepper The spice turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties — it’s being studied for its potential to fight cancer, improve liver function, lower cholesterol and stave off Alzheimer’s disease. When you combine it with black pepper, your body absorbs a thousand times more curcumin (turmeric’s active ingredient). And it doesn’t take much. If people are given a bunch of turmeric, within an hour there’s a little bump in the level in their blood stream. We don’t see a large increase because our liver is actively trying to get rid of it. But what if the process is suppressed by taking just a quarter teaspoon’s worth of black pepper? Then you see curcumin levels skyrocket. The same amount of curcumin consumed, but the bioavailability shoots up 2000%. Even just a little pinch of pepper—1/20th of a teaspoon—can significantly boost levels. And guess what a common ingredient in curry powder is besides turmeric? Black pepper. Another way to boost the absorption of curcumin is to consume it in the whole food, turmeric root (fresh or dried as a powder) because natural oils found in turmeric root and turmeric powder can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin seven to eight fold. When eaten with fat, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system thereby in part bypassing the liver. Turmeric Rice Recipe Ingredients • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 small onion, chopped (use more if you wish) • 1/2 bell pepper, chopped (use more if you wish) • 1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes, chopped (optional) • 1 cup uncooked rice, preferably brown • 1 teaspoon salt • Pinch of Black Pepper (I forgot this in the video) • 1 teaspoon turmeric • 2 cups broth or water DirectionsHeat olive oil in a skillet or saucepan with a lid. Add onion, pepper and tomato, if using. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft, about 5 minutes. • Add rice and stir to mix well; cook for another minute or two. Add liquid, salt and turmeric. Cover, adjust heat to maintain a simmer, and cook until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender (about 40 minutes for brown, 20 minutes for white). If the rice isn't tender when the liquid has been absorbed, add a little more liquid and continue simmering for a few minutes. Enjoy! This ancient herb has a long tradition as a food colouring and vegetable dye. It has been part of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for thousands of years, where it was primarily used to treat the liver and digestive problems. The active compound that gives Turmeric its healing power is curcumin. Lets look at 12 of the health benefits of Turmeric; 1. Cancer Cancer affects so many people. In Ireland an average of 30,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year. Curcumin has been studied for its wide ranging effects on tumours in particular its and this preventative effect against cancers of the skin, stomach, colon, prostate and breast. (Gururaj et al., 2002) 2. Cardiovascular effects Heart disease is a leading cause of death. Approximately 10,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Ireland Turmeric has been found to be effective in maintaining heart health by reducing plaque build-up and clot formation. Its also accredited with lowering blood pressure (Zahid Ashram et al., 2005). 3. Wound healing Curcumin has also been found to help speed up the healing of wounds (Sidhu et al., 1999. Its easy to make a turmeric paste by adding some water and applying this to the external wound 4. Anti-bacterial (according to Gupta et al., 2013) Turmeric is a natural anti bacterial and anti biotic - killing bacteria inside and outside of the body, thus promoting good health and preventing disease and illness. It has also been used to preserve food (Jayaprakasha et al., 2005) 5. Alzheimers and Parkinson's disease Alzheimer’s and related dementia currently affects approximately 38,000 people in Ireland. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions is being studied to see if it can help to prevent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease (Cole et al., 2005) 6. Inflammatory bowel disease AROUND 20,000 PEOPLE in Ireland suffer from inflammatory bowel disease such as colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Research has found the use of curcumin to have some positive results in the treatment of Inflammatory bowel disease - Holt et al., 2005 7. Psoriasis It is estimated that psoriasis affects about 100,000 people in Ireland and is a common reason for people to visit their GP. Topical use of Turmeric helps to reduce the severity of active psoriasis (Heng et al., 2000) 8. Rheumatoid arthritis Up to 40,000 people in Ireland have rheumatoid arthritis, a painful and disabling condition caused by the immune system attacking the joints. Curcumin was found to be effective in improving morning stiffness, walking time and joint swelling (Chandran and Goel 2012). Curcumin is one of the most promising natural ingredients in the treatment of arthritis (Henrotin et al., 2013). 9. Diabetes Turmeric has been used for the treatment of diabetes in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for thousands of years (Zhang et al., 2013) 10. Peptic ulcers Research is also examining the benefits of Turmeric in helping to reduce abdominal pain associated with Peptic ulcers. 11. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Turmeric extract shows promise in the treatment of IBS according to one study involving 207 volunteers (Bundy et al., 2014). 12.
